The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) Offers Solutions to Alleviate Foot Pain During Pregnancy
June 18, 2015 | Newburgh, NY — The majority of pregnant women will suffer from foot pain during their pregnancy. Many of them believe that foot pain is to be expected during a pregnancy, and will not actively seek relief for their pain. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) does not believe that pregnant women should have to endure foot pain. In fact, they provide multiple solutions to alleviate foot pain.
Pregnant women experience foot pain for a number of different reasons:
- Increased weight
- Foot instability
- Swelling
- Remaining active during pregnancy
Over the past few years, we’ve seen an increase in pregnant women with foot pain. Today, women are more physically active than ever, even running in marathons during their pregnancies — ACFAS.
The ACFAS recommends the following to help reduce foot pain during pregnancy.
Swollen Feet – Swollen, throbbing feet during pregnancy is caused by excess fluid (edema) located in the feet from weight gain. To reduce painful swelling it is important to keep feet up whenever possible, stretch legs, wear wide comfortable shoes, and do not cross legs while sitting.
Arch Pain – Pain located in the arch of the foot can be caused by arch fatigue, or over flattening of the arch. To relieve arch pain, stretch daily, avoid walking around barefoot, and wear supportive low-heeled shoes when possible.
Foot Cramps – These painful cramps are caused by increased blood volume and high progesterone levels brought on by pregnancy. To prevent these cramps, increase circulation by rotating ankles and elevating feet while sitting. If cramps persist, try a walk around the block and include daily stretching of the calf muscle.
Ingrown Toenails – Tightly fitted shoes cause painful ingrown toenails. If you happen to get an ingrown toenail avoid attempting “bathroom surgery.” Repeated cutting of the toenail can cause the ingrown toenail to worsen and the pain to intensify.
There is great deal that goes with being pregnant, but foot pain should not be one of them. If foot pain persists, a visit to a foot and ankle surgeon can prove to be beneficial.
